Those who perform
puja to Durga do it as a vow that brings numerous benefits. Durga puja symbolises
victory over evil both on a personal level and in society at large. So it is not
surprising to find that Durga herself is called Durgatinashini, she who removes
all obstacles and puts down calamities. Durga pooja is done with lot of grandure
during Navarathri festival.
Puja Procedure
On the Puja day
the worshipper is required to purify his/her body and mind. Before the Puja
a simple formality called the Sankalpa (vow) must be undertaken by the worshiper
of God. There are some simple and common procedures or steps to be followed
by the worshipper of god, like invocation of deity (Avahanam), offering a seat
to the deity (Asanam), welcoming the Deity (Svagatam), washing the feet of the
deity (Pad yam), and also offering some other procedures which belongs to Pujas.
In Puja the main things is worshipping flowers, lighting lamp (Deepam), and
Naivedya, food items such as rice, fruits etc.
The object of performing
the puja in this manner is to treat the deity as one would a guest, with honor
and respect. One must perform the Puja with lots of devotion and love. There
are a lot of Puja procedures or practices that are laid in our ancient Puranas. Puja
is only a devotional way for making communication between devotees and God.
Puja can be performed by any one who believes God. Performing Puja is not restricted
to any caste or gender. It is a universal form of worshipping God. Some
Pujas are performed in the house and some in temples.
